Parks and Recreation Department recognized for work on soccer fields

Parks and recreation chief Van Johnson was praised Tuesday for his department’s work with the local youth soccer program.
County commissioner Smokey Parrish said he wanted to commend Van and his whole staff for the work Parks and Rec has done building and maintaining soccer fields at county sports parks.
For many years, youth soccer was a niche sport, but as commissioner Parrish pointed out, it is now almost as big as the youth baseball program and on par with the youth football program.
Part of the success for the program is that there are now fields for the soccer teams to practice and play on – and much of the credit for that goes to parks and rec and to the many adults who have volunteered their time to work with the kids.
