Chili Cook-off brings in tourist season with a bang

Thousands of people hit St. George Island on Saturday to help raise money for the St. George Island Charity Chili Cook-off and auction.

The 29th annual event brought 52 chili chefs to the island to test their skills.

This year’s big winner operated under the name “Three Sheets to the wind chili” out of Panama City Beach.

Their win earned them 500 dollars and allows them to go to Las Vegas later this year to compete for 25 thousand dollars in the international chili cook-off.

2nd place and 300 dollars went to KATN chili out of Clearwater and 3rd place and 200 dollars was taken by Team Spice Boys 2.

JG Carver out of Hoover, Alabama won in the crockpot division.

This year’s Miss Chili Pepper is Megan Godfrey – Mister Hot Sauce is Joe Cope out of Destin.

Earnings from the event should be released soon, but judging by the crowd it was a very successful event.

The chili cook-off raises nearly half the annual budget for the St. George Island Fire Department and First Responders Unit.
