Fish and Wildlife Service considers listing striped newt as threatened

The US Fish and Wildlife Service is considering designating the striped newt as a threatened species.

Striped newt populations reach from South Georgia to Wakulla and Leon counties in Florida; they are seeing their numbers hit by habitat loss, disease, and drought.

If the newt is listed as a threatened species, federal money and assistance will be made to private landowners and states to pay for conservation efforts.

The federal government will also provide additional assistance to protect the striped newt through range-wide surveys and land management on public lands as necessary.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service is currently taking comments on the proposed action from  the general public as well as governmental agencies, the scientific community, industry, or any other interested party.

Additional information and comments regarding the striped newt may be sent via e-mail to northflorida@fws.gov
