This may be the last year Franklin county is allowed to keep state inmates at the county jail.Franklin County is one of three counties in Florida that houses state inmates at the county jail, but the Department of Corrections plans to discontinue the program statewide by June 30th, 2012.
That could have a major impact on the sheriff’s budget which currently gets about 400 thousand dollars a year to house the 40 prisoners.
And that won’t be the only impact.
The additional prisoners also helps lower the cost the sheriff’s department pays for meals for all prisoners and the work the state prisoners provide for the county at the landfill and road camp is also substantial.
Franklin County has been involved in the contract for about 15 years.
County commissioners have agreed to send a letter to the Department of Corrections asking that the program be continued.
County administrator Alan Pierce said the board will have to consider this issue during this summer’s budget process, because if the program is ended the sheriff’s department will only get 300 thousand dollars next year and the county will have to make up the difference.
