Franklin County commissioners have agreed to lease out a portion of the historic Chapman Building in Apalachicola to local cardiologist Dr. Shezzad Sanaullah.
The board voted unanimously to lease the building for 22 thousand dollars a year plus utilities and insurance; Dr Sanaullah was the only person to submit a bid.
But he’s not the only person who wants use of the building.
The Apalachicola library had hoped to move into the building and argued to the county that a public library would be a better use for the building.
They also felt that a library would be more fitting in Apalachicola’s historic district.
But the library didn’t put in a bid for the building – the library hoped that the county would provide the building for free so the library could spend its money on library services and Franklin County’s youth.
County commissioners didn’t buy the argument – the board felt that it was equally important to help a local doctor to insure that Franklin County residents can get the health care they need.
The 80 year old Chapman building once served as a high school and then housed the school district offices.
The school board leased the building to the county after the construction of the consolidated school.

Historic building should be taken care of to preserve the beauty of history. Those should be handled by architect rather than cardiologist.
