Outdoor burning banned in Franklin County

A burn ban has been approved for Franklin County.

Franklin County Commissioners on Friday voted to end all outdoor burning and fireworks in Franklin County until the wildfire threat for the area decreases.

All of Florida is feeling the effects of an ongoing drought – Franklin County this year has had 378 acres burned in Tate’s Hell From lighting strikes as well as several roadside fires from lit cigarettes being tossed out of cars.

The emergency ordinance bans all outdoor fires including bonfires on the beach burning in barrels and fireworks of all types – it does allow people to continue to use their outdoor grills, but does require that grill be constantly tended when in use.

It also requires that the charcoal briquettes be doused with water and not poured on the ground to burn out on their own.

The county is putting out flasher signs on all major roadways alerting people to the burn ban.

All county parks that have water access will have signs posted and water hoses for the public to use.

The county’s burn ban is in addition to a statewide ban of campfires on all state property and a ban on campfires in the Apalachicola National Forest.

The last time Franklin County had to ban outdoor burning was in 2007.
