State money available for cogongrass removal

The Division of Forestry has money available to help Florida landowners to get rid of cogon grass.

The state says cogongrass is considered one of the worst weeds in the world, and it is a priority for Florida to eradicate this threat.

Cogongrass infestations increase the risk and effects of wildfires, degrade the quality of forests and out-compete native vegetation.

The program provides reimbursement of 75% of the cost to treat Cogongrass infestations with herbicide for two consecutive years, up to a maximum of $100 per acre per year.

Landowners can apply to treat up to a maximum of 100 acres of infested area.

The program is available to 43 northern Florida counties including Franklin, Gulf, Liberty and Wakulla counties.

Applications will be accepted through Friday, July 8th – they are available at the Division of Forestry office in Carrabelle or on-line at www.fl-dof.com.
