County commissioners are looking at ways to save money and may have found one by allowing county workers to opt out of county health insurance.
County planner Alan Pierce said that during a recent health insurance survey of county workers, 11 said they would prefer a cash waiver instead of county health insurance.
Only 5 of those workers currently already have another health insurance plan in place but even that low number opting out will save the county 17 thousand dollars a year.
Once all 11 workers find alternate health insurance the county could save well over 30 thousand dollar a year.
County Commissioner Pinki Jackel said that the county might be able to save even more money by providing county insurance as supplemental insurance for workers who are eligible for medicare and medicade.
Mister Pierce said he doesn’t know if there are any county workers who fit the bill but he will investigate that possibility.
