FWC DIVISION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT
FIELD OPERATIONS
WEEKLY REPORT
September 2 - 8, 2011
This report represents some
events the FWC handled over the past week; however, it does not include
all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.
NORTHWEST REGION
OKALOOSA COUNTY
Officers Matt Webb and Ken
White were on vessel patrol conducting state fisheries inspections near
Destin when they observed a 34‑foot vessel returning from the Gulf of
Mexico. During the boating safety inspection,
Officer Webb determined the boat was returning from a fishing trip. The
captain told the officers they had harvested three Spanish mackerel.
When Officer Webb inspected the fish, he discovered all the fish were
undersized. The captain was cited for the violation.
Officers Pete Rockwell,
Ryan Nelson, and Alan Kirchinger were on vessel patrol conducting
boating safety inspections in Destin Harbor when they observed a vessel
operator in violation of the No Wake/Idle Speed Zone.
When the operator saw the patrol boat, he increased his boat’s speed,
traveling deeper into the harbor. The officers stopped the boat and
conducted a boating equipment safety inspection. A subsequent fisheries
inspection revealed six undersized spotted sea
trout, with the largest one measuring 12 inches in length. The legal
size for spotted sea trout is 15 to 20 inches and the daily bag limit is
five per person per day. The operator was cited for possession of
undersized and over the bag limit of spotted sea
trout and for violating the restricted zone.
Lt. Mark Hollinhead and
Investigator Eddie Gatlin responded to Eglin Air Force Base Reservation
after receiving information on a black bear cub injured after being
struck by a vehicle. An FWC bear biologist also
responded to monitor the cub’s actions to determine if it will be able
to return to its mother.
