Arrest made following investigation into methamphetamines

The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 29-year-old Crawfordville man in connection with the production of methamphetamines at his home, according to Sheriff Donnie Crum.
In addition, the suspect was charged with two counts of child abuse without great harm after detectives discovered chemicals used to produce methamphetamines near the bedroom occupied by two young children.
Lawrence Wilbur Cook II was arrested March 1 and was released March 2 after posting a $3,500 bond.
ImageThe case investigation began on Feb. 19 when sheriff’s office deputies were called to the suspect’s home to investigate an unattended death complaint. Sgt. Ronald Mitchell arrived on scene and observed a 31-year-old female victim hanging from a rope in a tree.
WCSO investigators attended the victim’s autopsy and it was determined that no foul play had taken place, but methamphetamine use had taken place during the evening before the victim was discovered.
During the course of the death investigation, Lt. C.L. Morrison and Sgt. Ronald Mitchell entered the home to get Cook a requested jacket and discovered the home in disarray and a meth lab set up inside. Drug paraphernalia and a white powdery substance, believed to be meth, was discovered inside the home.
A cooler was discovered next to the children’s bedroom. The bedroom contained two young children, ages 6 and 11. The cooler contained indications of a past meth cook or the preparation of a meth cook. Investigators also discovered fuel at the scene consistent with the cooking of meth.
In the following days, Detective Rob Giddens and Sgt. Eddie Wester inspected the cooler and determined that it contained several chemicals and equipment commonly used to manufacture methamphetamine. A small amount of suspected meth was tested and produced a positive test for the presence of meth. Evidence was collected and submitted to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) for additional analysis.
Due to the hazardous nature of the chemicals used to produce meth and the toxic threat to individuals exposed to the chemicals, the Florida Department of Children and Families was contacted to insure the juveniles were medically screened for possible exposure to chemical mixtures during the manufacturing process.
Cook was charged with two counts of cruelty toward a child: abuse without great harm and one count of manufacture of methamphetamine. Cook turned himself in to the Wakulla County Jail on March 1 without incident. Deputy Mike Zimba, Lt. Steve Ganey, Detective Nick Boutwell, Captain Cliff Carroll, CSI Rae Eddens, Deputy Nick Gray, PSO Sabrina Roberts, Wakulla EMS and Fire Department personnel also assisted at the scene.

Franklin County Hospital Board gets new member

The Franklin County hospital advisory board has a new member.

County commissioners this week agreed to place Apalachicola resident Robert Davis on the board – he will replace Margie Solomon.

Mister Davis works with Crooms transportation and is a Bishop with the Love center Church.

He was recommended to the board by Commissioner Noah Lockley.

The 9 member hospital advisory board has been very busy in recent years with local health care issues ranging from the construction of a new urgent care clinic in Carrabelle to operations at Weems Memorial Hospital.

The board is also now working on plans to build a new hospital in Apalachicola.

County commissioners also agreed to send a letter of appreciation to Mrs. Solomon for her years of work on the hospital board as well as to Gail Dodds and Paul Marxsen who resigned from the board in December.

Volunteers needed to help nesting birds on the old causeway

The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve and Audubon Florida are partnering on a large project coming up on the old St. George Island bridge Causeway.

The causeway is one of the most important nesting sites in the Panhandle for a number of protected bird species like terns, skimmers and oystercatchers as well as more populous birds like laughing gulls.

The two groups plan to remove vegetation (mostly grass) to keep the gulls from encroaching on the nesting terns, and they will be putting up chick fencing to keep the chicks from falling from the seawalls into the water.

The first stage of the project will be done on March 16th by Estuarine research reserve staff.

They will use a tractor to remove much of the vegetation.

Then, during the first week of April, they will need volunteers to help remove the vegetation where the tractor couldn’t reach and to put up the chick fencing.

It will be a one day commitment sometime between April 2nd and 6th, depending on weather and the availability of boat transportation and staff assistance.

But before any of the work can be done, they need people to help to survey the causeway for nesting American Oystercatchers and to mark the nests so they are not disturbed during the project.

That needs to be done before March 16th.

If you would like to help survey for the oystercatcher nests or help on any of the project contact Alan Knothe the Northwest Florida Coastal Bird Conservation Coordinator at 850-200-6279.

Apalachicola National Forest Prescribed Burning Today

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The U.S. Forest Service is prescribed burning in the Apalachicola National Forest today.

The 1,565 acre prescribed burn will take place in the area of Forest Roads 301 and 367 four miles south of Highway 20 in Leon County.  The burn will improve wildlife habitat, eliminate vegetation build up and reduce the threat of wildfires.

People are reminded that the smoke they may see today and tomorrow in this vicinity is not coming from a wildfire.  Motorists are cautioned to drive slowly with lights on while traveling in smoky areas. Drivers should be particularly cautious in areas where prescribed fires have taken place when it is foggy.  Morning fog can mix with smoke and decrease visibility further.

This is one of many prescribed burns the Apalachicola National Forest is doing during the 2012 prescribed burning season.

Individuals who are sensitive to smoke may contact the Apalachicola Zone Fire Management Officer at (850) 926-3561, ext. 6523, to be placed on a notification list for future burns.

Today’s burn is in burn unit 215 (see the Apalachicola’s 2012 planned burn map): http://www.nationalforestsinflorida.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/FY12_burn_plan_public.pdf
