Oyster Cook-off brings in big earnings

Big crowds helped raise some big money for the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department last weekend at the third annual oyster cookoff.

Beautiful January weather brought out the people, and delicious oyster dishes kept them coming back for more.

The total amount raised through the event is still being counted, but the event grossed well over 30 thousand dollars – already a big increase over last year’s earnings.

All of the money that was raised will go to the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department to help pay for the department’s fire truck.

There were 12 entries in this year's cook-off.

The winning dish was an oyster and spinach casserole cooked by the Eastpoint Volunteer Fire Department and they deserved the trophy.

Second place this year went to Rusty Hamlin, third place went to Kevin Maxwell.

The people's choice award (for most money earned by a group) went to the Owl Cafe'.
