Portion of Apalachicola Bay closed to oyster harvesting

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has temporarily closed a portion of the Apalachicola bay to oyster harvesting because of fecal coliform found in a recent water sample.

The state closed the conditionally approved Apalachicola Summer Shellfish Harvest Area #1652 at sunset on Thursday.

That area is north of the Apalachicola Bridge.

The Department of Agriculture will continue taking water samples and reopen the area when water quality allows.

You can see the Division of Aquaculture's Daily Status report on the internet at  www.FloridaAquaculture.com under the shellfish harvesting tab.  A detailed pre-recorded message of open and closed shellfish harvest areas is also available 24 hours a day by calling 653-8317
