UF Extension program could move into old Estuarine Research Reserve building at Scipio Creek

There could soon be a new tenant at the old estuarine research reserve building at Scipio Creek.

The estuarine reserve left the location in 2011 when it moved to a new center in Eastpoint and since then the building has been left unused.

Now the University of Florida Extension program is considering moving in.

The Extension office is currently housed in a small office in the Armory in Apalachicola; the old research reserve would give the program room to expand and locate a lab and other programs and services into that one building.

It also has space for classes.

According to County administrative director Alan Pierce, The lab would provide services associated with one of several oyster re-shelling programs that will soon be started in the Apalachicola Bay.

Right now the building is being leased by NOAA, and the land is owned by the City of Apalachicola.

There is a reverter clause in the lease that allows the city to reclaim the building if NOAA ceases to use it.
