FWC to hold public meetings this week to discuss proposed reef fish permit requirement

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is considering a new permit requirement for recreational fishermen who target reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico.

The proposal is for a mandatory permit or registry system to help with recreational reef fish data collection that would better define the population of offshore reef fish anglers.

FWC says the plan would enhance current recreational harvest data collection efforts for Florida’s reef fish species in the Gulf of Mexico, including red snapper, gag grouper, red grouper, black grouper, greater amberjack, lesser amberjack, banded rudderfish, vermilion snapper and gray triggerfish.

Fishermen are invited to comment on the proposal during a series of public meetings in March.

The closest meetings to our area are on Wednesday, March 5th in Perry at the Perry City Council meeting room and on Thursday, March 6th in Destin at the Destin Community Center.

The meetings will be held from 6 till 8 PM.
