Apalachicola considering changes to its tree ordinance

The City of Apalachicola is considering changes to its tree ordinance to make sure the city has greater oversight before trees in the city limits are removed.

The city was presented a draft revision to the city’s Tree Ordinance at their Tuesday meeting.

The revision clarifies the process that approval to remove, relocate, or substantially alter any tree located on city property rest solely with the Code Enforcement Office and the City Administrator.

In cases where it’s determined that a potential conflict will arise from removing or relocating a tree located on city property the city commission will be advised before a final decision is made.

The clarification of the rule was proposed after a public uproar following the removal of the cedar tree from Riverfront Park which the city used as a Christmas Tree.

The City Commission and the city’s Tree Committee will now review the draft and make any changes they see necessary.

Once the revision process is completed, it will take two public hearings to determine whether the changes will become city law.
