Franklin County working to build soccer field at DW Wilson Park

Franklin County is taking steps to build a soccer field at the DW Wilson Sports park in Apalachicola.

The board is acting at the request of the Franklin County Youth soccer League which was created in 2012 to give local children an opportunity to play soccer without having to travel to Gulf or Wakulla Counties.

About 150 kids take part in the program – with more joining up every year.

The problem is, there aren’t a lot of good soccer fields in the county so many of the kids are still having to travel to play.

At this time, the kids have to practice on the outfields of some of our baseball fields.

Building a new field with lighting and all of the amenities would likely cost over 100 thousand dollars and the county did apply for a furdap grant to pay for it but the grant was not funded.

Without the lighting, the field would cost substantially less - so now the county is looking at paying for the work itself.

The commission is waiting for their parks and recreation department to provide a cost estimate for building the field before starting the work.

They should have the numbers by their next meeting.
