Gag grouper population looking good; Greater Amberjack not so good

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management council says recent stock assessments showed good news for the gag grouper population in the gulf, but not such good news for greater amberjack.

The Council received the results of stock assessments on gag and greater amberjack at their meeting in late June.

As of 2012 (the most recent year of data in the stock assessment), gag grouper are no longer considered overfished, and are no longer undergoing overfishing.

The Gulf Council will consider new gag grouper fishing limits for  2015 at the August Council meeting.

The greater amberjack stock assessment, however, found that, as of 2012, greater amberjack was still overfished and undergoing overfishing, although the rate of overfishing has decreased.

The Council will consider an amendment at the August Council meeting of alternatives to increase the recreational minimum size limit for greater amberjack and to move the recreational closed season from the summer to the springtime spawning season.
