The
Franklin County Commission has agreed to send a letter of support for the
Apalachicola Area Historical Society as it seeks a state grant to repair the Raney
House.
The
Raney House is one of the oldest homes in Apalachicola – it was built in 1838.
Its
in the National registry of historic places.
The City of Apalachicola purchased the house in 1973 and made it
into a Museum which exhibits furniture, documents and artifacts of the 19th
century.
The
Historical Society is seeking a 350 thousand dollar Historic Preservation Grant
to shore up the structure.
Society
Spokesperson Lois Swoboda said there has been serious degradation of the home’s
foundation and on the southeast wall because of water intrusion around the
chimney.
The
grant would allow the group to shore up the foundation, repair windows and redo
some of the building’s wiring.
Commissioner
Smokey Parrish said he feels the repairs would be advantageous for the
community.
The
county commission approved the letter of support unanimously.
