Franklin
county Commissioners approved a rule on Tuesday that will keep people on the
west end of Alligator Point from putting roofs on beach viewing platforms.
On Tuesday the commission unanimously
approved an ordinance prohibiting roofs on detached structures seaward of the
Coastal Construction Control Line.
The county felt the rule was
needed after the Department of Environmental Protection decided to allow beach
viewing platforms on Alligator Point seaward of previous structures.
There were two reasons raised for
the new rule, one was a safety issue in that the structures could become
dangerous missiles during strong storms.
The west end of Alligator Point
has an extremely flat beach and is subject to sudden strong storms in the
spring and summer.
The other concern was that the
structures could block the views from other homes.
The move was supported by the
Alligator Point Taxpayers Association.
Commissioners felt the rule was needed
and approved it unanimously.
