This week marks the 5th
anniversary of the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
The University of Florida is
using the anniversary as a chance to talk to residents about some of the
lessons learned since the oil spill and to discuss steps needed to strengthen
coastal communities from future disasters.
On Thursday, April 23rd
researchers will hold a regional forum called “Five Years Later: Building and
Redefining Resilience” at three locations in Florida including the Apalachicola
Community Center at Battery Park.
The event will run from 9:30 to
3:30 and cover a number of topics including the lessons learned since the
Deepwater Horizon oil spill, research findings from studies on individual and
community resiliency and seafood safety, current needs that continue in
impacted communities and steps needed to strengthen communities.
The forum is open to the public –
you can find out more about it on-line at healthygulfcoast.org.
