Franklin County investigating the costs of mandatory trash pickup

Franklin County has asked the Waste Pro garbage company for an analysis of costs for county-wide garbage pickup.
Waste Pro is the only large garbage hauler operating in the region.

It provides garbage service in Wakulla, Franklin, Gulf, and Liberty counties.

Franklin County has provided Waste Pro with an estimated number of homes in the county so the company can calculate the costs of garbage collection in a variety of ways- including twice a week pickup, or 2 or more garbage cans per house.

The most likely collection structure would be a basic fee for once a week with one can, and then those residents who want more than once a week or more cans would pay an additional charge.

The Franklin County Commission began investigating the costs of mandatory garbage service for all households last month to address the growing problem of household trash being left on the sides of roads or in recycling bins.
Mandatory garbage pickup would also save money for the landfill and could possibly cut back on black bears activity in neighborhoods.

The county hopes to have the cost estimates for consideration in the next few weeks.
