EXPLORE NEW TRAILS AT THE APALACHICOLA NATIONAL RESEARCH RESERVE IN EASTPOINT

APALACHICOLA, FL-The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) oversees 246,000 acres along Florida’s northern Gulf Coast.  Hiking opportunities exist throughout the Reserve which encompasses coastal barrier islands, fresh and saltwater marshes, bottomland hardwood swamp, pine flatwoods and oak hammocks.

A microcosm of the ecosystems found in Franklin County can be experienced at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Nature Center located in Eastpoint. ANERR has 1,600 feet or nearly 1/3 of a mile of newly built raised wooden boardwalks that traverse the Reserve’s 28 acres plus another 400 feet of trails.  Visitors can experience a coastal hammock shaded by live oak and magnolia trees, a slash pines forest that opens up in to a freshwater marsh and circles through slash pines. Commonbirds and animals encountered include ospreys, eagles, box turtles, skinks and even an occasional black bear. The southern section of the boardwalk ends overlooking Apalachicola Bay where visitors can use a powerful scenic telescope to see across the bay, or just relax and watch local oysterman bring in their daily catch.

The boardwalk was funded by the Friends of the Apalachicola Reserve. Visitors to the ANERR boardwalk will see a series of twelve quotes along the trail from noted authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson. The quotes serve as momentary inspiration to help visitors connect with the nature that surrounds them. For additional information contact the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve at (850) 670-7700.
