National Lighthouse Day will be celebrated at the Cape St. George Light on St. George Island this Friday, August 7. Everyone who climbs the lighthouse on Friday will receive a raffle ticket to be entered into a drawing for a framed print of the historic lighthouse.
National Lighthouse Day commemorates the day that the federal government assumed responsibility for
operating U.S. lighthouses by an Act of Congress on August 7, 1789. Lighthouses were critical to
enabling ships at sea to reach safe harbor through treacherous waters, storms, and other adverse conditions.
Commemorate the work of the nation's lighthouses in the saving of ships and human lives over the years by climbing the Cape St. George Light on Friday! Tickets are available at the Lighthouse Gift Shop and cost $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for youth age 16 and under. Children age 6 and under climb at no charge. Climbers must be at least 40 inches tall. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The drawing for the lighthouse print will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday.
