MARCH 24, 2022 Highlights Webinar: NOAA Fisheries and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Federal Survey Mitigation Implementation Strategy NOAA Fisheries and BOEM will co-host two informational webinars to present the Draft Federal Survey Mitigation Implementation Strategy. The strategy addresses anticipated impacts of offshore wind energy development on NOAA Fisheries’ scientific surveys in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Expert staff will be available to answer questions. Everyone is welcome to participate in these events; they are not formal opportunities to comment. Sea Grant Seeks Input on Its 2024-27 National Strategic Plan The National Sea Grant College Program is currently developing its strategic plan for 2024-27. Previous plans as well as the current one can be downloaded from the Sea Grant website. To inform its 2024-27 strategic plan, Sea Grant is hosting a series of listening sessions, many of which will focus on a specific goal from the current strategic plan. A virtual comment card is also available to share your ideas. Ask the Marine Recreational Information Program: Survey Errors Saltwater anglers, for-hire captains, and other members of the recreational fishing community often ask how we collect recreational fishing data, and how we use that data to estimate total recreational catch. The third post in our Ask MRIP web series answers questions about different types of survey errors, how they impact our estimates of recreational catch, and what we’re doing to address them. West Coast Idaho Landowners Keep River Flowing as Drought Threatens Snake River Salmon Along the Lemhi River in central Idaho, water is essential to the farming and ranching that dominates the mountain valley. It is also vital to the recovery of threatened Snake River Chinook salmon and steelhead that once returned to the Lemhi by the thousands. Traces of DNA Can Accurately Assess Fish in the Ocean New research shows traces of DNA that fish species leave behind in the water can reveal the abundance and distribution of fish over large areas of the ocean as accurately as conventional fisheries survey methods. Southeast NOAA Offers Reward Up to $20,000 for Information on Sea Turtle Death NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the successful prosecution of the person(s) responsible for the death of an  entangled green sea turtle. It was found in a homemade net along U.S. Route 1, next to a kayak launch between Spruce Creek Park and Divito Park in Port Orange, Florida. New England/Mid-Atlantic Mitigating Impacts of Offshore Wind Energy Development on NOAA Fisheries’ Surveys In support of the Biden-Harris Administration’s goals of advancing offshore wind energy production, NOAA Fisheries and BOEM developed a strategy to address anticipated impacts of offshore wind energy development on NOAA Fisheries’ scientific surveys. The joint strategy underscores our shared commitment to advance offshore wind energy production responsibly while protecting marine biodiversity and promoting cooperative ocean use. Ships We Have Known A photo gallery of ships has graced a wall at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole for approximately 40 years. The ships represented there, both surface and submersible, have served as platforms for research by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center since the 1960s. Most of the ships are foreign vessels involved in the period of international cooperative research from 1967 to 1979.
