An inmate at the Franklin County jail escaped from the jail Monday evening, but was re-captured a little over an hour after the escape.

According to Franklin County Sheriff AJ Smith, a 41-year-old inmate named Charles Carpenter was in the yard with other inmates at about 7:30 Monday evening when he managed to breach the fence.

The sheriff said that officers who were overseeing the inmates were distracted by other inmates while the Carpenter escaped.

Carpenter ran toward the county landfill where he was able to find a truck with the keys in it.

The truck also contained firearms.

The truck was quickly spotted leaving the county on Highway 98 toward Port St. Joe when the Apalachicola Police Department took up pursuit.

Carpenter left the highway and took to forestry roads between c-30 and Highway 98 and led officers on a high-speed chase through the woods until he hit a dead end and then tried to flee on foot.

The woods were too thick for him to get away and he was captured soon afterward.

Carpenter has a long criminal history dating back to 2007 which includes battery, grand theft, drug possession and dealing is stolen property and was waiting to be sentenced for other charges later this month.

The sheriff said he will now face additional charges including escape and felony possession.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Gulf County Sheriff’s Office, Port St. Joe Police Department, Apalachicola Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol, and officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission assisted in the search.
