Miss Florida Seafood Pageant this Saturday at the Franklin County School

The Florida Seafood Festival will hold its annual Miss Florida Seafood Pageant on Saturday at the Franklin county School.

6 young ladies will compete for the chance to represent the Seafood Festival as Miss Florida Seafood.

Contestants this year include Katelynn Denney, Sara Gibbs, Brook Martina, Sallie Rose Paul, Drew Robinson and Hannah Westbrook.

Miss Florida Seafood wins a 1000 dollar scholarship from the seafood festival committee and attends several parades in surrounding counties to help promote Franklin County seafood and the Florida Seafood Festival.
The Queen also makes several personal appearances on TV and radio to promote the Florida Seafood Festival and Franklin County seafood. 
The pageant will be held Saturday night beginning at 7 at the Franklin County School auditorium.

The 54th annual Florida Seafood Festival will be held November 3rd and 4th at Battery Park in Apalachicola.

On-line workshop available for speckled trout fishermen

 If you are a fishermen who likes to target speckled trout, the state of Florida would like to hear your opinions on possible management changes.
The state recently held a number of in-person workshops on spotted seatrout management.
Those are now finished, but people can still take part through an on-demand virtual workshop on-line.
This newly-added online feature can be found on the public workshops page at www.MyFWC.com/Fishing.
During the virtual workshop you will learn more about the current speckled trout stock assessment and learn more about the current management plan as well as about any proposed changes.
Once you’ve viewed the workshop, you can submit your comments online at MyFWC.com/SaltwaterComments.

The FWC will be discussing input and potential future changes to the management of the species at the September 28th Commission meeting in Okeechobee.

Join ANERR for a snorkeling seagrass class on Friday

The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve is looking for people who want to take part in a seagrass ecology class and snorkel tour this Friday.
The adult-level class covers the basics of life in a seagrass bed.

The Class and Snorkel Tour will be held on on Friday from 11 to 3.

It begins with some classroom time at the St. Joe Buffer Preserve in Port St. Joe before moving to the St. Joe Bay for snorkeling around some beautiful seagrass beds.

Participants will hear a discussion led by experienced marine biology experts exploring seagrass conservation, and get involved with hands-on activities and group investigations.

If you take part you will have to bring your own snorkel gear, lunch, water bottle and change of clothes.

The Florida State University Coastal & Marine Laboratory seeks a highly motivated, detail-oriented full-time Administrative Assistant who will provide administrative support for the Director,the faculty, and the business manager (supervisor for this position). 

DEADLINE FOR APPLYING IS August 30, 2017 

Primary responsibilities:
Administrative support for the director: maintaining travel schedule, organizing meetings and taking meeting minutes for advisory groups, faculty, and staff meetings, organizing special events, and handling confidential assignments. 
  • Administrative support for the faculty and research staff: review of grant proposals for compliance with funding agency and FSU technical requirements, interacting with FSU Sponsored Research staff responsible for proposal submission, and facilitating effort certification reports for faculty and students.
  •  General office support includes: posting jobs and ensuring compliance with HR rules and guidelines while facilitating the screening, interviewing, and hiring process; ordering office supplies; distributing daily mail and sending out FedEx packages; serving as a back-up for P-card coding and reconciliation, Travel_Pay_Leave, and reservations.
Qualifications
  • A High School diploma or equivalency and two years of experience. Note: A combination of post high school education and experience equal to two years, is required.
  •  Must be highly detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and organize assignments effectively and meet project deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 2010, especially Word and Excel (or comparable software).
  • Experience working in an office environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, math skills, and knowledge of collection and/or cash handling procedures.
  • Ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision.
Anticipated Salary Range - $23,000 - $29,300 negotiable commensurate with education and experience.  Full benefits in addition

Field Dispatch: Cook Inlet Beluga Whales
This summer, for the first time, NOAA scientists and state agency partners are using a hexacopter to collect aerial photographs of endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales. Scientists can collect important measurements about individual whales from these photographs. Cook Inlet beluga whales are one of NOAA Fisheries’ eight Species in the Spotlight.

Field Dispatch: Of Seals and Saildrones
For the second year, NOAA scientists are using a Saildrone to collect data on northern fur seals’ feeding habits. So far, mother fur seals appear to be taking longer foraging trips than they did last year. Meanwhile, it turns out NOAA scientists aren’t the only ones using the Saildrone—the onboard cameras caught a photo of an ice seal hitching a ride.

California Storms Help Salmon by Reviving Habitat
Heavy rains and runoff from last winter’s near-record snows in California ended the state’s devastating drought. They also helped rejuvenate salmon streams. Swollen rivers have deposited a renewed supply of “woody debris”—downed trees and branches—that serves as an essential ingredient of healthy salmon habitat.

NOAA and the California Conservation Corps are advertising paid opportunities for qualified military veterans to enter the Veteran Fisheries Corps. Veterans can gain science-based technical training and work experience during 1-year positions working with the Salmonid Habitat Monitoring Project.

New Tool Explores Hawaii’s Fishing Communities
The Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center has launched an online Community Snapshots Tool that describes 42 fishing communities throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Each snapshot provides data on fishing involvement and demographic characteristics, putting the fishing data in a human context.

GulfFIN Releases Regional Implementation Plan
The Gulf Fisheries Information Network (GulfFIN) recently completed its Marine Recreational Information Program Regional Implementation Plan, outlining regional priorities for improving recreational fishing catch and effort data from the Gulf of Mexico. A collaboration between state, regional, and federal partners, GulfFIN is the first regional entity to complete this regional planning process.

Gulf Council Seeks Applicants for Advisory Panel
The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council has decided to replace its Ad Hoc Red Snapper Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) Advisory Panel with one that incorporates both red snapper and grouper-tilefish IFQ fishermen and fish dealers.  The Council is currently accepting applications for membership on this Ad Hoc Red Snapper and Grouper-Tilefish IFQ Advisory Panel. Applications are due September 8.
