Come on down - the water is fine

If you decide to jump into the Gulf this chili cookoff weekend – the water might be a little cold but it should be clean.

There are no swimming advisories in Franklin County for the chili cookoff weekend.

There were also no advisories issued for beaches in Wakulla County or Gulf County this week.

The Florida Department of Health tests 6 Franklin County beaches every week to see if there are bacteria in the water that could indicate a health danger to swimmers.

They also test seven sites in Gulf County and two in Wakulla.

If you would like to see the water quality sample results for yourself, we have posted them on the news page at oystrerradio.com.

29th annual chili cookoff is Saturday on St. George Island

The chili cook-off and auction raises money for the St. George Island volunteer fire department and first responders unit.

Its the biggest fund-raiser in the county, drawing thousands of people from around the country to St. George Island on the first Saturday in March.

Nearly 50 chili cooks take part in the cook-off and well over one hundred items are sold in the auction.

Last year the event raised over 100 thousand dollars for the St. George Island volunteer fire department and first responders unit.

As always this year’s event will begin at 8 AM with the 5K red pepper run – by 10 AM the chili will be cooking and at 11 the auction starts.

The awards presentation is around 3:30 – so make plans to spend the day out there.

There are a few changes this year that people should be aware of.

For the second year there will be a 5 dollar entry fee to get into the cookoff.

People will also not be allowed to bring in coolers or alcohol to the cookoff but will still be able to buy beer at the park.

Florida urges wildfire safety

With two large wildfires burning in south Florida, and a smaller one burning south of Bristol, the state is urging homeowners to make sure their homes are protected.

Officials expect this to be a very active wildfire season because of strong freezes this winter which has left plenty of dried vegetation to burn.

Current fire weather forecasts call for active fire behavior throughout the state in the days ahead.

Homeowners are urged to do a little yard work to make suret heir homes are as protected as possible.

Remove all dead ground cover, branches, and trees from your yard, clean your rooftops and gutters and make sure you remove anything near your home that could serve as fuel in the event of a wildfire and relocate them.

Its recommended that you create a defensible space of 30’-60’ around your home where nothing will ignite or continue to burn and if possible, landscape with more fire resistant plants and vegetation and make sure they stay pruned and well watered.

STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT CHIEFS' ASSOCIATION NAMES OFFICER AND INVESTIGATOR OF THE YEAR DURING ANNUAL CEREMONY

TALLAHASSEE – The State Law Enforcement Chiefs’ Association (SLECA) named its 2010 Officer of the Year during its annual awards ceremony yesterday in Tallahassee. Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Division of Law Enforcement Officer W. Garrett Creamer received SLECA’s top honor. Special Agent Derrell Jones, also of the DEP Division of Law Enforcement, was recognized as the SLECA 2010 Investigator of the Year.

“Each year, SLECA recognizes outstanding performance of officers and investigators in the field by selecting an Officer of the Year and Investigator of the Year,” said SLECA President Ron Cave. “Nineteen officers and investigators were recognized for their dedicated service to the citizens and visitors to our great state.”

Officer Creamer recently received the DEP Division of Law Enforcement’s Lifesaving Award for his heroic actions in saving human lives on two separate occasions in 2010. On May 5, 2010, Officer Creamer was the first on scene at a traffic crash that occurred outside of the Wakulla Springs State Park. Officer Creamer provided emergency first aid to victims and extinguished a vehicle fire that had victims still trapped inside. On June 30, 2010, Officer Creamer’s quick thinking and ability to act saved a child’s life by quickly moving her away from a motor home that was ablaze. Within a few minutes after the child was moved, the motor home exploded and flames engulfed the area in which the child had been.

Special Agent Jones served as the lead investigator in the fuel theft case in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Agent Jones was accountable for the overall direction of the case, operational planning, managed involvement of all the different agencies involved, documented the majority of casework, and was responsible for proposing the methods to resolve the case with arrests and seizures.

Officer of the Year nominees were: Officer W. Garrett Creamer, Florida Department of Environmental Protection; Sergeant Derrick Folson, Florida A&M University Police Department; Officer James Horton, Florida Department of Law Enforcement; Officer Jeremy Izquierdo, Florida State University Police Department; Trooper Danyen Komorek, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles; Officer Elpidio “Al” Padilla, Florida Department of Transportation; Officer Marc Shea, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission; and Officer Charles Townsend, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Investigator of the Year nominees were: Detective Steven Grenier, Florida Department of Financial Services; Lieutenant William Jackson, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles; Special Agent Derrell Jones, Florida Department of Environmental Protection; Investigator Carlo Morato, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission; Special Agent Christopher Newman, Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation; Detective Paul Paterson, Florida Department of Financial Services; and Special Agent Mark Willis, Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Also recognized for their bravery and heroism were Life Saving Award winners Officer Miguel Rodriguez, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services; and Lieutenant Anthony Wright, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Medal of Valor recipients were Sergeant Derrick Folson, Florida A&M University Police Department; Trooper Tammye Broughton, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles; and Special Agent Guy Gilbert, Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The State Law Enforcement Chiefs’ Association represents the interests of law enforcement managers and supervisors employed by the State of Florida. The organization provides training and educational opportunities that enable members to better manage state law enforcement agencies, foster and promote better mutual understanding among different types of state law enforcement functions, while promoting professionalism, ethical conduct, and competency in the field of law enforcement. Weems hospital CEO announces retirement

Weems Hospital CEO Chuck Colvert has announced his retirement from the hospital.
He made the announcement to the hospital advisory board last month.
County planner Alan Pierce said Mister Colvert will leave the hospital in 3 months to allow time to find his replacement.
Mister Colvert came to Weems Hospital in 2007 at a time that the hospital was in dire straits because of a previous management company that was going bankrupt.
He worked with the county commission to get the hospital back on a more sound financial footing and was also instrumental in the county passing a 1 cent sales tax to help pay for expanded health care services.
That tax money has already bult an urgent care clinic in Carrabelle and will also pay for a new hospital in Apalachicola.
The task of hiring the new CEO will fall to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital which has an affiliate agreement to help manage the local hospital.
Under that agreement the hospital’s CEO and Director of Nursing are actually TMH employees.
TMH says it will work with the county to make sure that the new CEO is a good fit for the area.
TMH plans to narrow the field of applicants to about 5 and then allow the county commission to have the final choice – if they are legally allowed to do so.
Commissioner Pinki Jackel expressed her desire to have as much input into the process as possible.
She pointed out that with the county about to embark on a nearly 10 million dollar project to build a new hospital and she thinks it’s critical that the new CEO has the qualifications to guide the county through it.

Emerald Coast Federal Credit Union considers opening Franklin County branch office

Emerald Coast Federal Credit Union has shown an interest in providing banking services in Franklin County.
The credit union currently only operates in Gulf County with locations in Port St. Joe and Wewahitchka.
It’s been in operation since 1939 it originally began as the St. Joe Papermakers Federal Credit Union.
The credit union has asked that county and cities send letters of invitation which the county commission was more than happy to do.
Commission Cheryl Sanders said she has spoken to officials at the credit union and they will only be able to open one branch in the county.
She asked that the county try to have the credit union locate in Eastpoint because of its central location.
Tyndall federal Credit Union is also considering opening a branch location here and are expected to make a final decision by the end of April.
County Commissioners are trying to lure in more locally owned banks after the closures of Gulf State Community Bank and Apalachicola State Bank last year.

UF Fine Arts students to spend Spring Break in Franklin County

Students from the University of Florida College of Fine Arts will be spending their spring break in Franklin County again this year providing assistance to some residents and working at a local school.
Students will conduct home health assessments, as well as build a children’s sculpture and organic food garden at a local school.
They will also continue to collect oral histories of from local fishermen – a project they began last year.
The students will also undertake a major school-based theater program to address the high rate of sexually transmitted diseases in the county and work with local artists to provide arts for home-bound individuals.
The UF team will be in Franklin County along with 23 artists and health care providers from March 6th through the 12th.
The group chose to spend Spring Break in Franklin County because we are one of Florida’s areas of critical concern with 23.1 percent of residents living below the poverty level, compared to 13.3 percent in the rest of the state.
Many residents in the seafood industry are also facing challenges from recent oil spill, changing weather conditions and ever increasing FDA regulations.
